Product Overview
Mupin Ointment 15g containing mupirocin 2% for treatment of bacterial skin infections including impetigo, infected eczema, and skin wounds caused by Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.
Product Description
Mupin Ointment 15G contains mupirocin 2%, a topical antibiotic belonging to the pseudomonic acid class, used for the treatment of bacterial skin infections caused by susceptible organisms, particularly Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA in some formulations) and Streptococcus pyogenes. Mupirocin works by inhibiting bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, an enzyme essential for bacterial protein synthesis, and has a unique mechanism of action that means cross-resistance with other antibiotics is uncommon, making it particularly valuable in treating skin infections caused by resistant organisms.
Mupin Ointment is indicated for the treatment of primary skin infections including impetigo (school sores), folliculitis, and furunculosis, as well as secondary infections of skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and minor wounds where bacterial colonisation is impeding healing. The ointment formulation provides an occlusive layer over the treated area that maintains the concentration of mupirocin at the infection site, optimises moisture retention to support skin healing, and provides a physical barrier against external contamination. The 15g tube provides a practical supply suitable for treating localised skin areas over the standard treatment course of 5 to 10 days. Mupin Ointment is available on prescription only and should be used for the prescribed duration only to minimise the risk of antimicrobial resistance development.
