Synjardy 12.5 mg/1000 mg film-coated tablets contain two active substances: empagliflozin and metformin. Empagliflozin works by blocking a protein in the kidneys called sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) which helps remove excess sugar from the body through urine. Metformin works by reducing glucose production in the liver and improving the body's sensitivity to insulin. This medicine is used to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes when diet and exercise alone are not sufficient. It can be used alone or in combination with other anti-diabetic medicines including insulin. Synjardy also helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, and reduces risks related to heart failure and chronic kidney disease in certain patients.
